The “Energy Storage Medium” corresponds to any energy storage technology, including the energy conversion subsystem. For instance, a Battery Energy Storage Medium, as illustrated in Fig. 1, consists of batteries and a battery management system (BMS) which monitors and controls the charging and discharging processes of battery cells or modules.

In general, storage systems are categorized based on two factors namely storage medium (type of the energy stored) and storage (discharge) duration. In the first type classification, the ESSs are divided to mechanical, chemical, and electrical storage systems based on the form in which the energy is stored.
In simple terms, it can allow the capture of generated energy when it is supplemental to needs, so that it can be stored and released at times when it is needed, for example, at times of peak demand. It provides the ability to instantaneously balance power supply and demand.
An electricity grid can use numerous energy storage technologies as shown in Fig. 2, which are generally categorised in six groups: electrical, mechanical, electrochemical, thermochemical, chemical, and thermal.
