In the long term, the capability of wind and solar to contribute to the national power sector will be influenced by a number of other factors specific to China, such as the dominance of coal generation in the power sector, long transmission distances of wind and solar energy, and expense of natural gas generation for variable load balancing.
This study aims to estimate China's solar PV power generation potential by following three main steps: suitable sites selection, theoretical PV power generation and total cost of the system.
The authors found that reductions in costs of solar power and storage systems could supply China with 7.2 petawatt-hours of gridcompatible electricity by 2060, meeting 43.2% of the country's projected energy demand at a price lower than 2.5 US cents per kilowatt-hour.
In addition, the grid penetration potentials of the solar-plus-storage systems were further quantified spatiotemporally for China through the integration of the techno-economic model and an hourly power dispatch model. Technical Potential.
The power generation and storage capacity potential data used in the grid optimization model were aggregated from the grid cell to the regional power grid level with the constraints that the bus-bar price of the combined solar and storage system is equal to or lower than the coal power price.
Wind power increased by 20.59 GW and total installed capacity reached 184 GW at the end of 2018. This means that wind and solar accounted for 52.9% of capacity additions in China, demonstrating their position as a mainstream source of electricity. Importantly, generation from wind and solar PV continue to rise, while curtailment levels are falling.
