As usual, the relevant data come from official announcements of the respective players and from reliable sources around battery production. The maps are also available in higher resolution.
Battery cells and other automotive components go through a multi-stage testing and development process from A to D samples ahead of production. Following the A-sample, a rough initial working prototype of a full-size commercial cell, B-samples are a more mature prototype subject to more rigorous testing.
Right now, there's only one such factory in Britain – a site in Sunderland, run by Chinese firm AESC since 2012. That gigafactory supplies the local Nissan plant and has an annual output of 1.8GWh. That's enough to provide batteries for, at a very rough estimate, 30,000 EVs.
This is the coating room on a production line at the UK Battery Industrialisation Centre (UKBIC), set inside a vast hangar on the outskirts of Coventry in the UK's West Midlands. I'm being given a tour of the facility to see how batteries are made.
