Solar towers have the highest requirement of approximately 45 m 2 /kW, in the case where no thermal storage is integrated. Many solar thermal power projects are currently in the pipeline (mainly in Spain) including plants using storage and ISCC plants (mainly in Morocco, Algeria and Spain).
The maximum size of a solar tower power plant is determined by the size of the solar field that can be built. This will be limited because once the distance from the heliostat to the central receiver becomes too large, efficiency will drop. It appears likely that the largest single field tower will be around 200 MW or less.
